Yesterday in church we sang this song. There is a beautiful and sad story behind this song.
How many times have we had a friend or even family member fail us. How comforting to find a friend in Jesus. Jesus never fails us.
This song was written by Charles Weigle. He was an evangelist and often spent time away from home preaching. One day he came home and found a note from his wife. She was tired of living as they did and had left him taking their young daughter with her.
Over the next several years he was often in despair to the point of thinking about suicide. Slowly God in His mercy restored Mr. Weigle’s faith. Finally he reached a point where he wanted to write this song as a testimony of what God had done for him. Eventually he was able to once again participate in Christian service. (Source)
How much more compelling is this song in its comfort knowing this history.
I would love to tell you what I think of Jesus,
Since I found in Him a friend so strong and true;
I would tell you how He changed my life completely,
He did something that no other friend could do.
No one ever cared for me like Jesus,
There’s no other friend so kind as He;
No one else could take the sin and darkness from me,
O how much He cared for me.
All my life was full of sin when Jesus found me,
All my heart was full of misery and woe;
Jesus placed His strong and loving arms about me,
And He led me in the way I ought to go.
Ev’ry day He comes to me with new assurance,
More and more I understand His words of love;
But I’ll never know just why He came to save me,
Till some day I see His blessed face above.
