I know I say that I love all of these hymns, but I truly do, and this one is no exception. Life feels so scary sometimes these days. I love these hymns that encourage my faith – I have a God who cares for me.
The author said the hymn came to him in about five minutes of time. He was struggling with mental anguish, and God gave him this song. Although he never told anyone what that anguish was we do know that he went blind at a young age, and that his fiancé told him she could never marry a blind man. Perhaps that is why the first verse is about a Love that will NOT let us go.
Every verse tells us another aspect of Jesus and why we can never expect Him to forsake us. In these days of uncertainty and trouble we need to draw our strength from the truths expressed here. We don’t need to rely on ourselves. Jesus is all and has all that we will ever need.
O Love that wilt not let me go,
I rest my weary soul in thee;
I give thee back the life I owe,
That in thine ocean depths its flow
May richer, fuller be.
O Light that foll’west all my way,
I yield my flick’ring torch to thee;
My heart restores its borrowed ray,
That in thy sunshine’s blaze its day
May brighter, fairer be.
O Joy that seekest me through pain,
I cannot close my heart to thee;
I trace the rainbow through the rain,
And feel the promise is not vain,
That morn shall tearless be.
O Cross that liftest up my head,
I dare not ask to fly from thee;
I lay in dust life’s glory dead,
And from the ground there blossoms red
Life that shall endless be
